Campaign Story

Hello dear ones,
We—Daniel and Indie—are two Black trans people building a family together. I (Daniel) am transmasculine, Indie is transfeminine, and I will be the gestational carrier for our baby or babies. We feel incredibly grateful to have the genetic ability to create biological children, but we need IVF (in vitro fertilization) to make that dream possible.
Although we both work full-time—Daniel as a professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Indie as a chef and artist—neither of our insurance plans covers fertility care. In Georgia, employers aren’t required to offer fertility benefits, leaving us to shoulder the full cost. So we’re turning to our communities, our loved ones, and their extended networks for support as we take this next step toward parenthood.
Timing matters. I recently turned 38, and while many people have healthy pregnancies later in life, my own bodily needs make it safer and more feasible to carry sooner rather than later. To move forward with our IVF cycle, we’re aiming to raise $20,000 in the next 60 days. We feel truly fortunate to be working with trans-affirming doctors at Emory Hospital in Atlanta who are wholeheartedly invested in our journey—but we can only proceed with your help.
We are overjoyed at the thought of becoming parents. We know the path will be challenging, but we also know the love, creativity, stability, and deep care we bring will offer our future child or children a home filled with guidance, curiosity, and joy.
A gentle request: because of our identities, we know not everyone will support our becoming parents. While this does not shake our confidence in ourselves or our family, we ask that this campaign not be shared publicly on social media, to help keep our process protected from those who may respond with harm or negativity.
